Cripple Creek Mining Stock &
Bond
Certificate Catalogue
A listing
of Cripple Creek mining stocks and bonds. Cripple Creek stock certificates
are our specialty!
Cripple Creek, Colorado
was a place like no other in the state. Up to the 1890's much of
Colorado's mining wealth came in the form of silver and the nation became
dependant on its silver for coinage; Colorado produced over 50% of the total
silver mined in the U.S. each year. With silver coinage in political
trouble and the onset of the panic of 1893, Colorado's great silver mines had been delivered
a devastating blow. It was Cripple Creek that came to the rescue!
With gold production that was at ever-increasing levels, some thought there to
be an unending supply of gold and the camp grew almost faster than it could keep
up with itself. New capital from the East and around the world flowed into
Cripple Creek. This activity bolstered not only the Colorado economy, but
undoubtedly, the entire nation. Some believe that Cripple Creek helped
pull the entire nation out of the financial panic of '93. The enormous
gold production gained Cripple Creek the name of "Greatest Gold Camp on Earth"!
And until the 1930's it was. The legacy of Cripple Creek lives on today in
an incredible array of collectable and historic stock certificates.

Some historical
context on this certificate: This certificate was issued on July
22, 1899 when J. Arthur Connell purchased these 1000 shares. While we
don't know exactly what price Mr. Connell paid for these shares on the stock
exchange, we do know that the highest price for Key West stock in 1899 was 6
1/8
cents per share and the lowest price was 3
1/2 cents
per share. So, if we assume that he paid an average of these
prices (4.8 cents per share), Mr. Connell paid approximately $48 for these
1000 shares, plus any associated broker commissions. Commissions for a
stock purchased on the Colorado Springs Mining Stock Exchange which was
selling for less than 5-cents per share would have been $1.25 per 1000
shares. So, Mr. Connell would have paid approximately $50 total for
these 1000 shares of the Key West Gold Mining Company's stock. In
1899, $50 had the same buying power as approximately $1,324 in today's'
dollars.

It is stated in
Colorado Magazine, Vol. 1, April, 1893; that the "Summit Gold
Mining and Milling Company...was organized for the purpose of selling
stock, and for that reason took a name as nearly like the great "Surface"
mine as possible." Referring to the mine which was owned by the
