Colorado Banking Industry

Many industries flourished in Colorado and many as a direct result of the mining industry.  Banking was no exception.  With the millions upon millions of dollars flowing into Colorado to finance the mining operations, and all the supporting businesses, there had to be someplace for all that money to go!

Above are 6 fine examples of Colorado banking certificates from several locations throughout the state:

Victor - The Bank of Victor.

Denver - Capitol Hill State Bank   - & -   Colorado Savings Bank

Castle Rock - First National Bank of Douglas County

Colorado Springs - El Paso National Bank.

Ouray - First National Bank of Ouray.

White-Bear Land and Cattle Company

Company operated cattle ranches in Routt and Rio Blanco Counties (west of Steamboat Springs).  The ranches were along the White and Bear Rivers, hence the company name!  Colorado land and cattle certificates are relatively rare.  This is an exceptional example!

Crescent Cattle Company

Another fine and colorful example of a rare Colorado Cattle certificate!   A great vignette of a "Crescent Moon" around the cow's neck.   Crescent Cattle had its home office in Denver, Colorado, but we are uncertain where in the state the ranch(s) operated.

Crystal Park Mining and Milling Company

This company had its offices in and operated near  Crystal City in the Elk Mountains.  The town of Crystal, as it is known today, is best known for the infamous Crystal Mill which is heavily photographed.  It was a silver "boom-town" from the 1880's until the 1893 silver panic when many Colorado silver camps met their demise.  But not Crystal City.  It bounced back and the large Lead King mine in the district produced into the 19-teens.  There are several buildings and still a few part-time residents there today.  This is a rare example of a Crystal City stock!

Gold Coin Mining and Leasing Company

The Gold Coin was a mine by accident.  The Woods brothers were breaking ground for a new hotel in the town of Victor when they struck ore and it became a fabulously rich mine. The Woods brothers virtually owned and built the town of Victor where the Woods Investment Company had vast holdings of mines and business in and around the town in the Cripple Creek District.  This is an extremely rare example of this company's stock. Only three certificates are known to exist.

Dauntless Mining Company of Leadville

This is a fabulous example of a Leadville stock certificate.   Leadville certificates were generally beautifully steel-engraved works of art and the Dauntless is no exception.

Hornespeed Propelling Company

This is a wonderful example of a Colorado aviation certificate.  Unique vignette of a by-wing airplane frame.
