The American West. It is full of mystery, beauty, myths, abundant land, and mining. What first brought men to explore the Western regions of America was the bounty of furs and unexplored territory and as exploration continued, vast riches of common and precious metals were discovered. While the lands were used for farming, logging, and ranching, mining is what really brought the American West to the forefront of the minds of the common man. With the thought of "striking it rich", there was a massive influx of people moving to the mountainous regions of the Western U.S. Metals were discovered in nearly every region of the West and mines were sunk, towns built and lives redefined. As surface ores were exhausted, deep mining became necessary to extract the vast ore reserves of gold, silver, copper and other metals. This was an expensive venture which required capital more than one man could often afford. Companies were organized, capital was raised, and men were hired to search deep into the earth for these riches. For the collector today, this has created a wealth of beautiful and unique certificates representing that influx of capital.

Alaska Issued / Uncancelled, dated 1919. Nice Alaskan mining certificate. This was a holding company for the Alaska Gastineau Mining Company, whose properties were located in the vicinity of Juneau in what was known as the Juneau Gold Belt. Property was a total of 2,166 acres comprised of 1,672 acres of lodes, 219 acres of placers and 275 acres of millsites and homesteads. The mining claims consisted of 4 groups of claims covering the Gold Creek lode system. This company has an extensive write-up in The Mines Handbook, volume XIII, 1918. Certificate is in VF condition.

Bullfrog-Pedestal Mining Company Bullfrog, Nevada Issued / Uncancelled, dated 1906. Incorporated in South Dakota. "Mines at Bullfrog Nevada" printed in green diagonally across certificate. Properties located north of the town of Bullfrog, Nevada on the north end of Bonanza Mountain. Included with this certificate is a hand-written note, presumably written by the owner of the shares, describing the properties, location, officers, where the shares can be traded, when & where the shares were purchased, assay information of the mine, etc. The note states, in part; "...This property consists of 9 full claims directly north of the town of Bullfrog Nevada 10 minute walk. Located on the north end of Bonanza Mountain on the same Ledges and vein system as the Gibralter-Tramps Consolidated and Denver mines are located..." Certificate is in F condition.

Montana / Wyoming Territory Issued / Cancelled, dated 1877. Issued at Bozeman, Montana. "Location: Clark's Fork, Wyoming Territory" stated on certificate. Silver was discovered on the Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone River in 1874. Trouble with Indians in that region prevented any large-scale mining until 1877 when the Eastern Montana Mining and Smelting Company build smelting furnaces. Very attractive Montana/Wyoming Territory certificate is in crisp, VF condition.

Montana Territory Issued / Uncancelled, dated 1889. Issued at Helena, Montana; Incorporated 1887 under the laws of the Territory of Montana. We have been unable to find specific information regarding this company, however it is one of the most attractive Montana Territorial certificates we have seen. Oversized certificate ( 12 3/4 x 9 3/4) adorned with a vignette of a mountain village and train. Was this company controlled by a local railroad for the purpose of acquiring land for the railway? Not sure, but certainly worthy of further research. Rare Montana Territory certificate is in crisp, VF condition.

Nevada Issued / Uncancelled, dated 1913. "Founder's Certificate" issued just 7 days after incorporation to the Secretary, George Banovich. Signed by Zeb Kendall. The company was located in the Willow Creek Mining District, Nye County, Nevada. Kendall bought the claim, The Rustler, of Charles Sampson and David Jenkins, who were the first to locate claims in the district in 1911. The Willow Creek Mining Company was the District's primary developer. The District was productive, but short-lived. Zeb Kendall made his fortunes in mining via leasing his properties. He was one of the early arrivals in Tonopah and Goldfield, building the first hotel, The Palace Hotel, in Tonopah in 1902. He opened the first lease in Goldfield on the January claim. Zeb was also a ardent mine promoter, forming the Zeb Kendall Brokerage Company to promote mines across the state. Zeb Kendall became a state senator, serving Nye County, Nevada from 1909 to 1916 and was inducted into the Senate Hall of Fame for his service to that county: "WHEREAS, Senator Kendall introduced and helped secure the passage of important legislation pertaining to mining claims and regulations,telephone-telegraph franchises and requiring public water companies to supply water for fire protection; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, That Senator Zebedee “Zeb” Kendall, a well-respected mining pioneer, civic leader and Legislator, is hereby inducted into the Senate Hall of Fame of the Legislature of the State of Nevada." Certificate is in VF condition.
