This rich mining history began with the “Pikes Peak Gold Rush” in 1859 and continues today. The sheer number of mines in Colorado shaped the states history, culture, and topography. Alturas Shale Oil Company

  • Grand Valley, Garfield County
  • Issued / Uncancelled, dated 1926.
  • Properties included the Hope mine in the Grand Valley, Garfield County.
  • Oil shale has been a boom and bust industry in Colorado for over 100 years. Interest in oil shale and the stock for oil shale companies began to get red hot around 1918 due to an article in National Geographic and government interest in surveying for oil shale deposits. The topic is heating up again today, as Colorado has the largest deposits in the word of oil shale, from which liquid oil is difficult and expensive to extract.

  • Chaffee County
  • Issued / Uncancelled, dated 1904.
  • Stated on certificate: “Property located in Chaffee County, Colorado”. Issued at Denver, Colo.
  • Attractive certificate from a seldom seen district. Chaffee County featured mines that produced Gold, Silver, and Copper as well as having smelting & refining facilities.
  • Certificate is in F condition. This is the last certificate from this company in our inventory!

Clay County Mining & Milling Company

  • Central City, Gilpin County
  • Issued / Uncancelled, 1892. Issued at Denver, Colorado. Stated on certificate: “Location of Mines , Gilpin County, Colorado”. Properties located at Central City.
  • Small format certificate (9″ x 3.5″) with attractive mining scene vignette.
  • Certificate is in VF condition.

East Lake Milling and Mining Company

  • East Lake District – Holy Cross, Eagle County
  • Issued / Uncancelled, 1905. Stated on certificate; “Denver, Colorado”.
  • This is a previously unknown certificate variety for this company. Beautiful tan border with multiple small vignettes and bright gold seal. Properties were located at East Lake Camp which lies deep within the current Holy Cross Wilderness area, between Fulford and Holy Cross City on East Lake Creek. The company also operated a hydro-electric power plant on East Lake Creek. Only a handful of mines were worked within the long glacial valleys of the Holy Cross region due to the difficulties in reaching them and getting the ore to a mill. Most of the mines in the area were small and only moderately productive, however, some were worked off and on into the 1920’s. Remnants of many of these operations in East Lake, Cross Creek, and other drainages can still be seen today by the mills, cabins, tailings, and machinery left behind.

  • This is an attractive certificate from a rarely seen and very small mining district. East Lake Camp lies deep within the current Holy Cross Wilderness area, between Fulford and Holy Cross City on East Lake Creek. The company also operated a hydro-electric power plant on East Lake Creek.   • Certificate is in VG+ condition with small chip on lower-left corner.

Gold Mining Company of Colorado

  • San Juan County
  • Issued / Uncancelled, 1909. Issued at Denver, Colorado. Properties were located near Eureka, San Juan County. Offices at Silverton.
  • This company purchased the properties of the Astor Mining Company, as a result, owners of Astor received these shares of Gold Mining Co. stock.
  • Certificate is in F condition. Ink stain at lower-right corner. OOPS! Issuer spilled the ink well.
