Colorado
has a rich history of mines & mining and the mining stock certificates presented below are
just a few examples representing the financing of the mines and milling
operations throughout the state. Mining in Colorado has taken on many
faces: Gold, Silver, Copper, Tungsten, Molybdenum, Uranium, Coal and even
Diamonds. This rich mining history began with the "Pikes Peak Gold
Rush" in 1859 and continues today. The sheer number of mines in
Colorado shaped the states history, culture, and topography. Today, Scripophily allows us to

Colorado Fuel and Iron Company
Pueblo - Coal Mining
Issued / Cancelled. Issued at New
York, Incorporated in Colorado.
This company, better known locally as
CF&I, was formed by the merging of Colorado Coal &
Iron Company and Colorado Fuel Company in 1892. CF&I was
one of the 3 major coal mining companies in Colorado. The company
operated mines throughout the state; Fremont County, Gunnison County
(Crested Butte), Huerfano County, Las Animas County and others.
CF&I owned a number of "company towns" that served the coal mines owned by
the company; Sunlight, Spring Gulch and others throughout the sate.
CF&I, over the years, also was a major manufacturer of steel rails, iron,
spikes, nuts, nails, cast iron pipe, "re-bar" and copper wire.
CF&I was part of the Dow Jones
Industrial Average from 1901 to 1912.

East Lake Milling and Mining Company
East Lake District -
Holy Cross, Eagle County
Issued / Uncancelled, 1905.
Stated on certificate; "Denver, Colorado".
This is a previously unknown
certificate variety for this company. Beautiful tan border with
multiple small vignettes and
bright gold seal. Properties were located
at East
Lake Camp which lies deep within the current Holy Cross Wilderness
area, between Fulford and Holy Cross City on East Lake Creek. The
company also operated a hydro-electric power plant on East Lake Creek. Only
a handful of mines were worked within the long glacial valley's of the
Holy Cross region due to the difficulties in reaching them and getting the
ore to a mill. Most of the mines in the area were small and
only moderately productive, however, some were worked off and on into the
1920's. Remnants of many of these operations in East Lake, Cross
Creek, and other drainages can still be seen today by the mills,
cabins, tailings, and machinery left behind. Certificate is in
VF condition.

This is a nicely decorated certificate
from a rarely seen and very small mining district! East
Lake Camp lies deep within the current Holy Cross Wilderness

Issued / Uncancelled, dated 1902.
This company was unique in that it was one
of a handful in Colorado that successfully focused on placer mining.
Mining operations were located at Telluride, San Miguel County. A
very early incorporation of this company is noted in Production of
Gold and Silver in the United States; Buchard, 1881,
stating: "...the Keystone Company was engaged most of last season
erecting flumes and other preparations for washing on an extensive
scale. They ran just a month...and cleaned up $3,500 in gold..."
Very attractive certificate, oversized;

around Breckenridge, best-known for its dredging operations, which began
extensively in 1898 to extract rich placer deposits from the Blue River
and other surrounding basins. This companies Bucyrus Dredge
can still be seen today in Galena Gulch where, between 1899 and
1904 it dredge the Swan River. Certificate is in
