The Colorado Springs Rapid Transit Railway Company - Stock certificate dated 1891. Issued to and signed on reverse by Colorado Springs Judge E. A. Colburn. This certificate represents the first re-incorporation of the transit company after being acquired by A. L. Lawton, F. L. Martin, Edwin J. Eaton, and A. A. McGovney, but prior to the Colorado Springs transit system being purchased by Winfield Scott Stratton. Wonderful certificate depicting car #10, Pikes Peak Ave., which was built in 1887 and was one of the original rolling stock of the Colorado Springs & Manitou Street Railway Company, which originally was drawn by horse. Upon the entire system being upgraded to electric power in 1890, the car was converted and powered by two 20hp engines. The majority of these smaller cars (only 16-feet long) were decommissioned after Stratton purchased the line. The rail line was finally extended to Manitou in late 1890. See the Colorado Springs and Suburban Railway Company certificate for a continuation of the history! |
