This Crested Butte
Telephone Company certificate represents one of only a handful of
telephone companies from Colorado mountain towns.
Colorado telephone service began in Denver in February, 1879 with the switchboard
being located at 1514 Larimer Street and was one of the first handful of
such exchanges in the world. Phone service was organized by
a partnership of three Denver businessmen; F. O. Vaille, E. O.
Wolcott, and Henry R. Wolcott.
In July, 1880,
H.A.W. Tabor and his business associates organized the Leadville
Telephone Company. The American Bell Telephone Company licensed
Leadville Telephone to provide telephone service for the town of
Leadville and the surrounding area.
Certificate issued April 28th, 1907 at Crested
Butte, Colo.
